The Doom Gallery

In 1993, Doom was released, raising the bar of first person violence.  In 2024, The Doom Gallery (demo) was released, a mod for a decades old video game known primarily for its rip and tear action that utilizes that same engine to create a contemplative, nonviolent, gallery experience.  In The Doom Gallery there are several dozen pieces of visual art that interface with the themes of Doom.  

This is a development build.  I’ve been working on the mod in my spare time, but I’ve recently started a new job that has significantly slowed my progress.  However, for those who are interested in seeing my current build, I’ve decided to upload it to itch.  While a portion of the intended final experience is captured here, understand that this is a work in progress, and that some issues may be present.

Known Issues

• I’m still curating a list of paintings.  The process of curating the museums collection has grown in scope, and I’ve been reading various books on art history to find important and interesting pieces that aren’t easy to find through simple googling.  As a result, some parts of the museum are still waiting to be filled with art
• Some parts of the museum have misaligned textures or nonsensical lighting.  I’m aware of these visual issues, but am saving them for one final polish pass once the entire structure of the museum is established
• When I started making this wad, I didn’t know how to use Slade.  As a result, the way textures are loaded might not be optimal.  I’m not exactly sure what causes it, but at various points when entering new parts of the museum for the first time, there will be a short hitch.  Any subsequent revisits are perfectly smooth, which leads me to believe that this is some sort of texture cache issue.  If you know more about wads and textures, feel free to suggest fixes
• In the final release I want to have a readme file that has credits for all of the artists in the collection.  Currently, that reader isn’t finished
